Home Health INOSITOL  NICOTINATE – What is it?

Inositol nicotinate is nothing but inositol combined with niacin. It is a compound which is made up of two chemicals namely niacin and inositol. The structure of the compound comprises of 6 molecules of nicotinic acid with one molecule of inositol in between it.  Both niacin and inositol form together in one structure to form inositol nicotinate.  This is an important B vitamin which is very essential in the body.

Niacin is a water soluble B vitamin which does not get stored in the body. When supplements of niacin are consumed at high doses for a long period, then it causes niacin flush in which a person experiences reddening of skin of mouth and hand along with extreme burning sensation and uncomfort. This happens when blood vessels dilate which causes a sense of warmth and flushing of skin.  Niacin is extremely important for human body as it helps in nerve transmission. It also aids in fats transportation in body and helps in the process of digestion. Niacin is also very important for eye health and skin care.

Inositol is also a water soluble B vitamin which is a precursor of phospholipids which are essential components of cell membranes. Inositol prevents accumulation of fatty deposits in heart and liver. It is an important nutrient for the brain. It is plays a major role in nerve transmissions in brain.

What happens when NIacia and Inositol are combined together?

When both niacin and inositol are combined together in one structure then it is called as inositol nicotinate. It is also referred as “No flush niacin” because a person receives all the benefits of niacin vitamin without having to undergo the painful sensation experienced with niacin supplement. When inositol nicotinate enters the gut, it is absorbed as it is into the stomach and then it is hydrolyzed and broken down into niacin and inositol.  This process aids in niacin being released slowly into the bloodstream thereby avoiding the niacin flush.  Inositol nicotinate also plays a role in production of HDL boosting effects like niacin but with low side effects.  Inositol nicotinate increases levels of HDL or good cholesterol and reduces LDL or bad cholesterol in the body and helps to keep the heart functioning healthy.  It helps in preventing damage to heart by cardiovascular diseases.

Niacin supplements should always be taken only after consulting with a doctor as high doses of this can cause niacin flush and can also lower blood pressure of a person.  The advisable and recommended dosage is between 20 mg -75mg. It is best to include niacin rich foods in diet like meat, poultry, dairy products, dates, beans and legumes, potatoes, avocados and mushrooms.

Therefore we can conclude saying that inositol nicotinate is an improvised version of niacin providing the same benefits as niacin but without the back draw of niacin flush. So, what are you still waiting for? If you plan to get started with this drug, it is always advisable to talk to your medical health practitioner first. With a world of benefits, inositol nicotinate is definitely a good choice.
